My son is one of those lucky individuals that can take to a new activity like they were born to it. He stepped into roller blades with no help from anyone…he just went. This translated into not even sweating when he donned a pair of ice skates for the first time. He is also now apparently a ‘pro’ at downhill skiing after a mere 3 lessons with his school up at Whistler. No problem for him. His confidence in all things wheels was why we purchased him a locally made (and not cheap) long board for a birthday. He now glides effortlessly around the ‘hood like it was an extension of his long legs.
Granted he hasn’t been on a ‘regular’ or short board too much. But as an avid player of games like Skate 3 he is familiar with the world of boards and the lexicon and we hear plenty about kickflips, grinds, ollie’s and carving. As are his classmates who apparently already have Penny Skateboards. I am not sure where they got their boards as Penny is just now announcing that they are shipping to Canada. They ship by Fedex and seem to have a good system set up for online shopping and shipping rates.
Penny Skateboards are of the plastic variety. In fact this Australian company has been around for over 30 years, so these boards are old timers in skate history. They have kept a pretty retro look when it comes to the design, but like any good boards, they are totally customizable. This isn’t an off the rack board to beat up…this is one that can represent YOU and your uber coolness 🙂
You have the option of choosing the original Penny or the longer Nickel board. The Nickel board is 27 inches in length. This brings it in short of the traditional cruiser style long boards but quite a bit bigger than the original Penny board. The longer the length the more sense of stability a rider gets…hence the ‘cruise’ abilities of the long board tradition vs the skate park stunt styling of a shorter board.
I had a great time designing my own board. What do you think?
Customizing your board can go beyond the online abilities. Penny Skateboards has all the grip-tape, stickers, iPhone cases and cool hats and t-shirts to complete your Penny look. You can order all your trucks, wheels and other arcane bits n bobs separately too if you need replacement parts or just want to build your own board. The options are very nearly endless for the die-hard plastic board lover. If you swear by the durability of a plastic board, then Penny Skateboards with their long history of hipness are for you.
I love skate culture. Adam has met and chatted with some great skaters of all ages who were polite and inclusive due to their common passion. Next time you are passing a skate park, take a look at the brands of boards and name drop the Penny to up your ‘in-ness.’
