Over the years, back to school shopping/prep has been more about making sure kids have decent shoes and rain jackets (which are almost impossible to find in Vancouver ironically in the fall). When it comes to school supplies we have just had to make sure they had decent backpacks and sent cheques to the schools who covered their basics classroom needs. However, tomorrow is a big day in our house. Tara will be heading into Grade one, Caity into Grade 6 but we will see Adam off at his first day in High School and that has involved a bit more shopping.
Mind you, we probably won’t know all his needs until we see what his teachers want for the various classes and projects, so the shopping will no doubt be a long term thing and that is why I love Staples.
Most stores jump on the back to school band wagon and while their shelves are filled with every binder, notebook and pen that you can dream of, but by mid-September, those shelves are picked clean and not replenished. At Staples they will have what you are looking for all year round. They are also extremely helpful for people like me who did not grow up here in Canada and find some of the terminology my kids and their teachers bandy about a bit baffling. The staff at my local Staples do a great job of helping me find what I need.
This year, Staples provided me with a lovely new office chair. It looks very nice at what used to be my desk but is now taken over by the family computer and my son playing games on his Steam account, I am assured it is very comfortable for game play. But now….I wonder how it will fair as his time is taken up with what is bound to be sometimes overwhelming amounts of homework. He used to prefer to lurk up in his room to tackle work, but I have always enjoyed him being down in the family room, where I can easily lean over and offer help when needed or at least some encouragement. Perhaps this new comfy chair will entice him to spend more time at my desk and I can watch my lovely son grow before my eyes.
Grade 8 is such a change for kids….New routines, new dynamics, much more responsibility. My son will have to tackle public transit for his choice of school and being ever more independent. Except when he needs his mommy to help with finding the right supplies and hopefully Staples will help us all out.
As a new school year begins for many….Staples would love to know: What Will Happen in Your Chair this year? This year we will see homework take more hours than gameplay (we can dream) we will see more focus on the future instead of the here and now. We will see a boy grow before our eyes. What will you see?
