Clean socks are a privilege, not a right

Exploring the ‘hood

May 5, 2014 by Kerry Sauriol Leave a Comment

The Lower Mainland has so many fun and interesting places to explore….the list of places to fill up a ‘staycation’ are endless and fun for the whole family.

Last weekend we were invited to a BBQ at the Fort Langley National Historic site.   I haven’t been there in ages and am sad to say that my kids had not yet checked it out.   I was happy to see that my memories of the place were not wrong and the kids had a blast and managed to learn a little about like in ‘olden days’ BC.

Interaction and a chance to touch and try things are the key to any kids brains and Fort Langley and their charming staff go out of their way to make sure the kids get a great idea of what life was like when Fort Langley was the centre of western civilization.   The kids tried out barrel making, sharp shooting, gold panning and chatted with the goats.   Rain or shine it is an amazing place to explore. The staff is very knowledgeable, friendly and happy to answer any questions.

The buildings are beautiful as are all found inside.  The kids were fascinated with the idea of people bringing in fur to trade for tools, beads and so on.

Last year we had to turn down a stay in one of their oTentik’s, and deeply regret this as it looks like a great experience for the whole family…basically an over night stay in a fort! How cool is that!  They even have a Scottish one!

Do check out their schedule of events as the next few months are packed with ‘old-timey’ themed activities around Victoria Day, Aboriginal Day and much much more.
