Despite the controversy and the big unknowns when it comes to the true effect on our brains that living in an electronic soup has, I firmly believe in technology and that our children need to understand and be comfortable with the developments in tech and a technological lifestyle. Not all kids come from families who are so entrenched in tech as ourselves, and therefore school is the one place we hope they can keep up with their more fortunate peers. Our school now has a collection of iPads as well as regular PC’s and smartboards for various classrooms and lesson plans. This isn’t a big deal to my kids, but for the kids who only ever get to try using an iPad in the store, this is a huge bonus.
Therefore, I was very interested in this email that arrived in my inbox about the announcement of the first Samsung School in Canada at BC’s Riverside Secondary School. For the first Canadian pilot, Samsung is providing the 11th grade physics class at Riverside Secondary School with Samsung School, which seamlessly integrates 31 Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 units, a 65-inch digital e-Board and powerful Samsung software, to create a digital classroom with tools for the teachers and students to use, giving them real time interaction and feedback while at the same time, learning real world uses for state of the art technology.
Technology in the classroom is not the be all and end all, but I think giving teachers and students opportunities to see the potential uses of tech beyond social networking and games. So many careers now revolve around having more than a grasp of the ever changing technology, and I feel that our schools do need to do more to help prepare kids for their future working lives.
“Samsung School is the classroom of the future, and it’s here today for Canadian teachers and students,” said Philippe Lozier, Director of Business Solutions for Samsung Canada. “In a technology-savvy world, educators have been eager to see digital classroom innovation move beyond just piecemeal device integration and toward a fully integrated solution. The pilot program in partnership with Riverside Secondary School will help us showcase that the solution is here and ready, and can give educators the ability to digitally engage their students like never before.”
To date, more than 20 schools around the world from Africa to Asia, Europe and North America have piloted Samsung School. As will be the case with Riverside Secondary School, each of these real-world pilots have helped enhance and prove Samsung School before it launches. Research has shown improvements in class convenience, student engagement and lesson comprehension.
