Strangers in the Snow

January 27, 2009 by Kerry Sauriol 5 Comments

So there is this ‘mom’ I see everyday as we go about shuttling our kids to school.

I assume she works.

She always looks amazing.

She has lovely high heeled boots…even in this snow.

She wears this gorgeous flowing long winter coat.

Her hair is always perfect..and funky and modern too.

And today she sported an umbrella with a fur trim!

She and I have one thing in common.

Our car.

Her in silver, us in gold.

Same model.  Not sure if they are same year..pretty close anyway.

I usually don’t even shower before getting the kids to school.  I tend to save that for the calm AFTER the storm.

I usually arrive (in this weather) in my rain jacket (Eddie Bauer), sweats and big rubber boots (Marks Work Wearhouse).  Today a great big woolly hat completed my ensemble.

Yeah.

HIP…

Cool…

Yeah.

Anyway.

Today she approached me.   To chat.  About our cars!!!

She was even more glamorous in person.   I really like her hair cut.

She was very charming and very fun.

She was asking if my car sucked in the snow too.

We both drive Chrysler Pacificas.

We pretty much like em for all the same reasons.

The look, the leather seats, and the fact that not only does it have a cd and dvd player…it also comes with a tape deck!

She figures this appeals to ‘our’ generation.

Though she figured she and I couldn’t possibly be in the same gen with me being pregnant and all…she patted my belly…..said that is what you do when people tell you they are pregnant….???…anyway, I digress.

It is true…having the tape deck was a bit of a thrill for me too.  I dug out all my old tapes I could find and annoyed the kids with a trip down memory lane.

Nice to see that she does that too.

Cars…..bringing people together.

And sadly yes…my car failed badly in the snow ….YES we don’t have snow tires..THIS is VANCOUVER for pete’s sake…but it does have traction control.   I think the fail was the front wheel drive.

My Honda sucks in the snow, too. I also blame the front-wheel drive. Plus automatic transmission and all seasons. Which is why I am disappointed that it’s snowing again today. We’ve had our share and then some!

She’s glam and you are rocking the Grunge Look. It’s like Donny and Marie: She was a little bit country, he was a little bit rock and roll. Or something like that.

Anyway, fun to make a connection, even if it was over cars that let you down in the snow.

I never did get why people I just met — even if we had in common a cool car that sucked in the snow — felt permitted to pat my belly when they found out I was pregnant.

Sorry your car let you down.

Those moms scare me, I have to admit. I am nowhere near as cool as they are and they know I know it.

    Blah.

OMG, just about every mom at my daughter’s school is this way. I feel like I need to prepare for Ms America just to walk in the school…and yet I don’t. *sigh* 🙂
