Children Remember

November 11, 2008 by Kerry Sauriol 4 Comments

Because my sons school had craftily arranged a ‘pro-d’ day yesterday, they held their Rememberance Day assembly on Friday.

When I strolled into the gym, I was instantly touched by all the posters that some of the older grades had made in honour of the soldiers past and present.   One was ‘For my Grandpa.’

The guest speaker was clearly touched too.   The school apparently invites this one vet every year to attend and speak to the children.  I thought this was wonderful.

It was a lovely ceremony.  Different classes either sang or recited poetry.  The senior band did a rousing version of ‘Oh Canada’ and we all sang along.

My son’s class stood up and recited a poem.

The Grade 7’s sang along to Avril Lavigne’s version of ‘Knockin on Heavens Door.’

And it was nice and respectful to see that many of us mom’s were a bit teary when Mr. Pugh, the World War II veteran shared some of his feelings and experiences.

I was also touched by how respectful all the children were.

When you see a school like Adam’s…it is filled with children from all over the world.  Children who have either experienced horrors themselves, or come from families that have been through war, famine, you name it.

A Canadian classroom is filled with stories.  Rememberance Day is no longer just about Canadian Soldiers and the wars of the past.  It is about the wars of the present and wishes for the future.

I am glad our schools are doing their part in making sure we Never Forget.

I think that’s great. I happened to be in England this year and I was amazed at the poppies EVERYWHERE. My husband and I went to the family gravesite to place some poppies on the vets. Teary.

I will forever be grateful. Canada, U.S., U.K. – we tend to fight for the same things. And the men and women who have served and are serving now will always have my gratitude.

Very well said about Canada class room and stories. I was so much interested about it. When you see a school like Adam’s…it is filled with children from all over the world.
