Crunchy Carpets

Clean socks are a privilege, not a right

First Day of Grade One

September 2, 2008 by Kerry Sauriol 6 Comments

‘cept it wasn’t.

Because they had to go to their old Kindergarten class and teacher and then they just drew pictures and read for an hour and that was it.

Tomorrow, they MIGHT have a class and teacher to go to. Might.

I really don’t get how they run schools here at all.

I don’t understand how classrooms are not assigned BEFORE you show up. We didn’t have problems with late registrants as a kid..new kids just showed up and we all said hi! That was it.

I know some kids last year were ‘homeless’ for weeks before they sorted it all out.
To me this feels like MORE time my kids are in school NOT LEARNING.
I don’t have a supplies list or anything.

Nana, Caity and I killed the hour by having breakfast at A&W. Whoot.

Then we went shopping. Heh.

Well okay, it was just for cat food…but we did hit the other stores too!

Yesterday, being the prisoners last day of freedom, we decided to hit Maplewood Farm..we hadn’t been all summer.

We were a bit late getting there, but it was actually fun to see them close down the place, since this entails bringing all the animals into the barn and the animals…especially the goats..get really really excited.

There were goats baaing and maaing all over the place. Heads were being butted, and tails flicked.

Quite cute.

We were also lucky to catch the pony rides for the kids. Caity was thrilled.

Later all the kids were out playing for as long as they could….and then it was in quick for baths and bed early.

And now the routines begin.

And now I must sign them up for all sorts of things.

And now I suppose I must volunteer at Adam’s class and all that other parentey stuff.

Joy.

I’ve never heard of schools being so disorganized. I feel bad the the kids.

I worried about you not too long ago when I heard about the earthquake. šŸ™

Hi – I found your blog from a comment that you left on another blog (Random Thoughts of a Student of the Environment). I’ve often wondered about the one-hour-first-day thing myself – what’s the point?
That said, in my experience (8 years at that school) the assigning of classrooms and admittance of new students always goes very smoothly.
I usually kill the time chatting with the other moms while my toddler runs wild on the playground – no point going home only to have to come back so quickly.
As far as the supply list goes, our (Vancouver) school does all the buying for us – we just pay ($12.50 for kindergarten, $25 for all other grades). It’s super convenient!
Nice to find your blog – I’ll be back to visit!

Hmm Phillip had a great first full day. He is still in a portable, however. And his new teacher is a soft spoken and eager, smiley young woman. We shall see how the kids bring her around lol… there are a few REALLY REALLY foul mouthed, rough, and just plain nutty kids in the class lol. *think crack head parents*

But that’s the neighbourhood I am in I guess. Sigh.

Well having had three children go through the system….and having two sisters, husband and brother in law all teachers here is what I can tell you.

At the end of the school year the administrators at the school have a vague idea of what the enrollment levels will be come September…but nothing concrete. Families come and go through out the summer and populations change. That being said…it’s about class sizes….the teachers have negotiated on behalf of our children what they believe is a healthy class size….mind you I know many a teacher who would like to see the class sizes smaller. Anyhow, it isn’t until the end of the first week of school that they have a real handle on the enrollment numbers. They try and make the class sizes equal…and you also have to remember that there are children with special needs that come into the mix as well….so then they are faced with what kind of supports are needed for each class. To throw another clincher into the picture….if enrollment in on grade is down they try to combined grades….many parents don’t like this….in comes another situation that needs to be worked on…..

There are lots of variables to class sizes ….at the end of the day…the teachers and administrators are trying to come up with the best class mix where all benefit….so when I think of that…I think…it’s just one week….the kids are starting to learn a routine of getting up anyhow…walking to school…becoming responsible….classroom etiquette and so on…so it is still learning….maybe just not the ABC’s…..
