Crunchy Carpets

Clean socks are a privilege, not a right

Talking vs. Acting

July 5, 2007 by Kerry Sauriol 8 Comments

It was too hot to sleep last night, so I was thunking instead.

I think the BlogHer Act and the Canadian version are great. I think it is a perfect way to use this medium to build a unified voice behind one or a few causes and issues.

But it got me wondering…..and then I saw Oprah (don’t laugh). There was these two ladies who happened to be 9/11 widows. They have worked their behinds off in trying to help other widows around the world….and have been focusing and even visited Afghanistan. I really admired their open hearts and their dedication. They focused on small things that they could do for women with the money they could….it was heartwarming and impressive.

So my rambling thoughts and point is this…..Does everyone have a charity or group or organization….national or international that they are convinced do a fantastic job. A group that is already out there….a group that we can focus on depending on the consensus of the BlogHer Act surveys, for example.

I know there are all the biggies out there, but I have a feeling it is the small groups or individuals out there who are working hard to help people that really make differences somehow…on a human scale at least.

While on a big scale….entire NATIONS need a complete overhaul, I do think aid and support on an individual basis, makes a massive difference.

Please, I would love if everyone shared any information they have about organizations or groups that they support or that are part of ‘Your’ cause.

Thanks

We are pretty passionate about this one. My husband volunteers his time on the board of Cops Care Cancer Foundation. It helps kids and their families battling cancer. It’s a great one!

I am very interested in Al Gore’s campaign to help the environment. Have you seen “An Inconvenient Truth”? I would like to do what I can to help the environmental movement. My niece has a Master’s degree in sustainable development, and she gives me good advice.

I don’t have a cause… although I have 3 or 4 old streams of volunteering I did and I hold some affection for them.

In related news.. I used the tip from blogs last year to Sleeping Children Around the World (metro mama, I think) for Christmas gifts. All the aunties who don’t need more stuff and granny’s and my Moms friends who still give me stuff (and my kids).. they got bedkits for children, made locally and distributed in needy areas worldwide. A great a case for a little does a lot. http://www.scaw.org/

I just stumbled upon your blog and I’m glad I did–you have great stuff here ๐Ÿ™‚ Our family supports the fight of Autism awareness and “cure” which is steadily improving in it’s greatness. Our son’s have autism so it is near and dear to our hearts but we are primarily interested in bettering their lives and those who are affect by autism. Mostly with political stuff I end up feeling like a small fish in a big pond ๐Ÿ™‚

My favorite charity is Women for Women International. It is rated four stars (highest) by Charity Navigator.

You sponsor a woman in a war-torn country for $27 a month (US) so that she can receive education and job training to better support her family. You write letters back and forth once a month and they translate them for you. You also get photos. It is very cool.

I donate to the Humane Society, but I don’t have any grassroots kind of thing I’m dedicated to.

Good Ol’ Dirk_Star sent me over this way.
This topic was everywhere I turned yesterday.
I am participating in Blogathon 2007 for the organization Resist,Inc. on July 28th. I choose them because of the variety of community based organizations they assist with grants throughout the nation. Their mission statement “Funding Activism to Create Social, Economic and Environmental Justice” can easily be adopted as my cause.

Skimming through but have to applaud your dedicated work here and at West Coast Women. I had to “feed” upon your offerings.

Be well and enjoy the day.
