So Adam will turn five next Monday.
I haven’t had a chance to relax and wax nostalgic and get weepy about this yet. Â Between having a rotten cold, the hospitalized Mother in Law, being really busy and now my OWN mom having some sort of lung thing…..just REMEMBERING his birthday has been a miracle around here.
We decided to not do a birthday PARTY this year. The cost and hassle just seemed too overwhelming. Instead (fingers crossed) we plan on spending the day attending his fave and not yet discovered fave’s like the aquarium and Science World.  I say fingers crossed because we jump everytime the phone rings as it is either good or bad news about Crunchy Husband’s mom’s condition….and the mood here swings back and forth back and forth.
I am hoping my mom’s ‘lung thing’ is nothing big. I am sure she is hoping the same thing.  Crunchy Husband was a bit too preoccupied to really think about it OR the fact that I had another of my weird ‘attacks’ last night, but managed to stave of the worst of it with a dose of Benadryl.
That has me feeling a bit irked. Selfish, I know….but human.
One good thing about this preoccupation is that I have managed to curb the obscene spending that tends to occur around birthdays and Christmas for the kids.  Usually CH plunges into ToysRus and just starts ripping things off the shelves. His usual excuse is that he is picking stuff up for his ‘rents too. Riiiight.
This time I actually managed to stop him at TWO action figures from each family member. And one biggie from us. I am SHOCKED. And I can only imagine he will suddenly dash off and buy more stuff because it just doesn’t feel like enough.
And we wonder why our kids act so spoiled. BECAUSE THEY ARE!
CH will freely admit that he LOVES spending money on them.
We just bought a whack load of summer clothes for them this evening. Granted Caity did need new shorts….but really.
I think it is a catharsis for him.
For me it is spending money on myself or even better, someone spending money on ME. Â For him it is buying stuff for his kids.
So it will be a more low key birthday for the boy…but a good one I think. We will spread it out. I am also ordering a TRANSFORMER cake for him for the weekend to share with the family.  Even better – on the day after his birthday, his preschool is doing a special BUILD A BEAR day! What a deal!
Which reminds me, I have to do goody bags for his classroom.

I’m frankly amazed by all that you are managing to accomplish in your current situation! Hope you feel better soon and the Mum and Muminlaw are well soon, too. Remind us on Monday, please, to wish Adam a Happy Birthday.

My Luke just turned 5 last week- I never do big parties. Just something at home with their choice for dinner and a cake. Oh and presents! It sounds like going to the aquarium would be great, wish we had one around here! So Crunchy Hubby likes retail therapy? I thought only women did that!
Hope everything settles down and your mom is alright!

Hope both the moms will be alright. Very happy birthday wishes to the big 5 year old~ keeping up with the jonses’ type of parties just wear people out … the low key approach you’re doing is the way to go.

My MIL read me the riot act of how birthday parties are such a waste the other day. She would give you a gold star plus plus for what you have planned for Adam. It will be great.
Remember we have to make that date for me to buy all the clothes you guys don’t need anymore. I just can’t face the stores again. You are my hero.
