DIY projects are a great hobby. When it comes to huge DIY housing projects, it can seem overwhelming or you may think it’s out of your budget. But you’d be surprised at what a few hand-me-down items, paint, and personal accessories can do to change your space into something wonderful. Decorating a playroom on a budget is something that’s easy and fun, and your kids will love it.
First, take inventory of what you already have…and maybe things you need to get rid of! Sometimes less is more when working with a smaller space, so you’re not dealing with as much clutter. For a child’s playroom, you’ll ideally want to have a few basics like a table with chairs, shelves, and a toy chest for extra storage.
If you don’t already own these pieces, search Craigslist for cheap furniture or scour the area for garage sales happening in your neighborhood. The most important thing to remember is that any used item you buy needs to be sturdy. Old works just fine. Falling apart does not. Even if a piece looks a little worn, remember a fresh coat of paint can make it look new again in no time.
Have fun with colors. Just like any other room in your house, you will want to select shades that complement each other. Choose an inexpensive patterned rug or a colorful bean bag chair to serve as eye catching pieces for the room. When selecting room décor, you don’t have to stick with primary colors. Branch out so that the space doesn’t become quickly outdated as your child grows up. Incorporate a few interesting pieces, such as toys passed down from your own childhood or unique thrift store finds, to create a more at-home feel.
If you simply don’t have the space to dedicate a separate room for a play space, you can still create a play station for your child by decorating a table or corner of a room. Add several oversized pillows to a far area of a room with a small book shelf or plastic kitchen set to allow your kid a place to play. Or, customize a play area by decorating a small table and chairs with cheap table banners that can be interchangeable as your child grows.
Creating a playroom inexpensively is definitely doable. Pull ideas from Pinterest and parenting and home décor magazines before you start your project. Work out a budget for how much you can spend and don’t forget to take before and after photos to share when you’re all finished with your DIY playroom.
Take the renovation one step at a time. Clean out and prep the area you want to use, paint the space, and then start placing all the furniture and decorations that will make your children’s playroom a place they’ll love spending time. DIY projects don’t have to be expensive, you just have to think outside of the box and have fun with them.
