This November, we have gone to dry and chilly and wanting nothing more than to hide under blankets to wet and wild and wanting nothing more than to hide under the blankets. The countdown is on to the Christmas madness, but there is still PLENTY of time to snuggle down and relax, either alone or with your family. And that is why Netflix is so great.
Our family has Netflix on almost every electronic device we own. My son recently watched The Kings of Summer. It was a refreshing change from some of the more “vulgar” shows that appeal to 12 year old boys.
When Tara wants alone time, Veggie Tales has become a popular choice. However, being that we are NOT a religious family, this has led to many interesting discussions about God and the origins of mankind. Mega heavy for a 5 year old, but see what ‘entertainment’ can lead to!
While our family does enjoy watching shows together, I have noticed that the kids seem to like to take turns hanging with mom and watching stuff one on one. Depending on what we pick, these snuggle times are a chance for some bonding and, like Veggie Tales, watching the shows that grab their interest leads to some great chats with them.
People can bemoan that modern technology and the ease of availability of ‘passive’ entertainment is a detriment to engagement and families connecting. While that CAN be true, with our family it is a way to share. My son loves finding new and interesting ‘facts’ to share with us, and my middle daughter loves finding interesting documentaries. Caity recently, went through a bit of anxiety and trouble sleeping. One thing we did was let her watch Netflix at night when she couldn’t settle. This eased her worries about not sleeping and she managed to get through this and now is doing great.
Netflix is all about YOU getting to watch what YOU like when you want it. I love this. Netflix is my escape time.
I spent my late summer nights out on the patio with the laptop binge watching series like Homeland, House of Cards and Hemlock Grove.
Now I watch the amazing series, The 100. I can’t recommend this show enough. Go. Watch it. Now.
Time for you to share. Do you watch Netflix as a family or is it all yours on your own?
