Seasonal topics are the fertile basis for all good blog editorial calendars. I don’t have an editorial calendar for Crunchy Carpets, so my stuff is usually a bit of a mess and the ‘holidays’ don’t get as much coverage as other bloggers would do. HOWEVER, there is also another reason I don’t post on the big topics all the time….mainly because I don’t have a particular angle on it. Let’s look at Halloween. It is on Friday, and I am SORT of ready for it.
And by ready for it I mean I have STORE BOUGHT COSTUMES AND STORE BOUGHT TOTALLY NOT HEALTHY CANDY TO GIVE OUT. No teal pumpkins here for the kids with allergies (sorry), no healthy snacks, and no plans to donate the candy.
We love Halloween here, but tend to be fairly traditional when we celebrate it. We live in an area of mostly townhomes so it is a fantastic and car free area for the kids to go crazy under supervision of their daft costumed mom. I do boggle at the parents who drive the kids from court to court, but whatev. There are dads shooting off loads of fireworks and back in the days when we had energy we would go NUTS decorating the yard.
But nothing nichey blog worthy really. No big angle apart from how we do it and what we think other parents should perhaps do….
1. RELAX….have some fun.
2. DRESS UP!!
3. LEAVE ONE PARENT AT HOME TO HAND OUT CANDY WHEN YOU LIVE IN A FAMILY HOOD LIKE OURS.
And hence what got me thinking about this post.
I got an email from the reps behind Loblaws and it got me all nostalgic.
“Halloween is a kid-focused occasion but in my neighbourhood it’s a treat for adults too,” says Tom Filippou, Executive Chef, President’s Choice® Cooking Schools. “We want grownups to see the social side of Halloween instead of being haunted by their parental obligations.”
We did this for a while. We used to invite some other Halloween loving friends to share the night with us. One of my husbands closest friends used to spend HOURS with my husband building their elaborate setups outside while I planned food and drink and and decor for the inside of the house. Then we adults would all take turns taking the kids out trick or treating or handing out candy and hanging out in all the craziness.
I feel bad that we haven’t done this in a while. We don’t entertain much these days. These days it is all about the kids and the candy. Those days were a bit of both. A bit of nostalgia for all the fun parties we went to PRE children. Oh those were GREAT parties. Oh I have sooo many stories.
I do try to get dressed up myself though. This year gonna be a chunky version of Cersei Lannister.
I totally agree with them on this one though:
“For many Canadian pizza restaurants, Halloween is the single biggest sales day and no wonder! Between getting home from work, dressing up the kids and dishing out candy, it’s nearly impossible to make something. But with the specter of 100 candy bars arriving in the next few hours, should the kids really be eating pizza? Today, take-out food from the supermarket is so much more than potato wedges and fried chicken. Grocery stores like Loblaws® and Real Canadian Superstore® now offer a huge range of delicious take-home meals that you and the kids will love, like creamy mashed potatoes and turkey spinach meatballs.”
Yummy munchies with some wine are way more fun than pizza. Right?
And picking some delicious President’s Choice products right now is a lot healthier than pizza too. I also received a release announcing that “Loblaw Companies Limited has announced that it has successfully achieved its pledge to remove all artificial flavours and artificial colours from its full range of more than 4,000 President’s Choice® brand products.”
That is pretty impressive.

“One of the best tricks to make sure the kids are properly supervised while enjoying social time is to get together with friends, family or neighbours. Take shifts trick-or-treating with the kids while the rest of the adults enjoy a spooky Halloween cocktail and hand out candy. PC® black label Cosmopolitan Cocktail mixer and Blood Orange sparkling soda beverage add a blood-red or brilliant orange colour to your drink. If the evening of October 31 is a chilly one, your roaming neighbours’ hands will be thankful for a steaming cup of PC® black label Sipping Hot Chocolate or mulled wine as they canvas the street with their kids. A crockpot on an extension cord will keep your drinks warm while you enjoy catching up with friends at an outdoor gathering.”
Please note I received NOTHING for this post. This just proves that I do read my emails.
