There is one constant ‘thing’ times 3 that we are always picking up, or looking for or retrieving. This ‘thing’ times 3 has been with us since our now big boy was born almost 12 years ago. This thing times 3 is a blanket. A lovie if you like. Each kid here has had one and they are still around today.
This was the first one. I believe it was a 2nd hand find, but it became Adam’s blanket. My mom has tried to repair it from time to time, but this is how it looks now.
This is all that is left of Caitlyns. It was a hand made gift from a cousin on Vancouver Island. It was Caity’s pick for comfort and cuddles.
This is what is left of Tara’s blanket. This was knitted for her as a newborn by her nana. It too has had repair work attempted but has never stuck. However, it is still much loved and will be until there is barely a thread left, like her brother’s and sisters.
I have always been a bit bemused by these blankets and my kids love of them. I never had anything of the sort as a kid. Did you? Their dad apparently had a pillow he coveted…but I think his love of pillows is a general ‘I LOVE PILLOWS’ sort of thing.
We just lately convinced Tara to leave her blanket at home except for long trips or overnights. It was much needed for a while for going to preschool but she slowly worked on leaving it at home and is fine now until she can’t locate it for bed time. The two older siblings like to make sure theirs are still near their beds as they regress when unwell or sad. Adam has told me too that many of his peers still have their favorite blankets or stuffies too.
What about your kids?
Any strange attachments? We won’t mention my cousin and his mom’s “nitters” that he held onto 🙂
Do you worry about any of their obsessions? I don’t think having a blanket reflects on any negative issues….I have fairly strong and confident kids despite their blanket love.
Oh and they are ALL called Dee Dee after Adam named his blanket.
