Tips When Buying Wine Online

March 31, 2014 by Kerry Sauriol 1 Comment

E-commerce is a booming industry and the UK is one of the global market leaders. The British public are increasingly turning to online outlets for purchasing goods and in response more business are offering their products online. This has allowed for niche companies to thrive where otherwise they could not on the high street. One industry this particularly benefits is wine and this article will give you some tips on how to order wine online.

Why Buy Online?

By buying online you can buy directly from wine specialists rather than choosing from the mass marketed, low cost supermarket wines on offer. Wine by post are perfect for wine aficionados who want to indulge richly flavoured wine because they have been stored properly to make sure that their flavour stays the same. Supermarkets and high street wine retailers often stock very broadly similar wines because they are the ones that have been determined to sell the most. This selection is incredibly limited however and the wine aficionado definitely benefits from buying online with access to a far greater variety of wines than any single shop could offer.

Price Comparison

Wine is a product which comes with an incredibly varied price tag. Many variables factor into the cost of a bottle of wine but the internet has leveled the playing field somewhat. Now you can compare different wine retailers at your leisure and it is well worth doing so – the price of a bottle can vary quite considerably. If a wine is cheap and common you probably won’t find as much variation but if you’re buying a more expensive wine then do make sure you get prices from at least 3 different retailers to compare before buying.

Buy From Trusted Sources

As with any product, you should exercise caution when buying online. Most shops are trustworthy businesses but make sure that you look out for a ‘lock’ icon in your browser when you’re buying to make sure your transaction is secure. Also make note of any security verification marks the online shop has – these are often prominently displayed and indicate that an independent third party has audited the website and deemed it safe.

Wine is a product with almost unlimited variations. By sticking to the high street you are ignoring a vast world of wine out there, so it’s definitely worth buying wine online!
