More Room to Maneuver in the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander

March 27, 2014 by Kerry Sauriol Leave a Comment

When looking for a family vehicle, there are a few “must-haves” that we all keep in mind. It has to be big enough, to begin with. More room leads to less backseat bickering, after all! Safety is also a top priority, as are factors like fuel economy and value for money. Crossovers tend to fit the bill in a number of these categories, making them firm family favourites. With this in mind, how does the new crossover 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander measure up?

Interior Design

The new Outlander comes equipped with all the bells and whistle that one would expect from a new crossover in 2014, including full leather trim, slick metal highlights, and user-friendly large buttons on the dashboard. It’s not too fiddly, which is handy when you’re trying to juggle tasks on the school run and deal with backseat chatter all at once! There are three rows of seats, although the third row is definitely better suited to children rather than adults in the family. The third row can be tucked away to provide added luggage space when you need it for family vacations. Overall, there’s an impressive amount of space available in what appears at first glance to be a small package.

Safety Features

If you look at any older Mitsubishi at carsales.com.au, you’ll see that safety is an area where this brand usually comes out on top. The new 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander is no exception, and in fact it’s at the top of its class for safety. Features include electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and a whopping seven airbags. This includes airbags to protect the driver’s knees and rollover sensors to help keep the car safe in a collision. Fancy new features also include a radar system to track vehicles ahead of you on the motorway, as well as lane departure warning to keep you in line on the road.  In crash testing, the Outlander has scored at the top of the list for both frontal impact and side impact. Models with all-wheel drive score slightly higher than the two-wheel drive option, however.

Value for Money

Will the new Outlander break your budget? It offers a variety of price points, with the starting price besting rivals such as the Volvo XC60 or Honda CR-V. The high-end GX5 model offers a wide range of gear for your money, including cruise control, sat-nav, heated leather seats, and the full array of safety features.  In terms of fuel economy, the Outlander provides nearly 30 mpg, which is competitive for its class. Next year there will be a plug-in hybrid available which will give an even more competitive level of efficiency.

The Verdict

All in all, the new 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander seems to tick all the boxes for a family car. It’s large but not so large that it’s difficult to handle, and it can comfortably seat up to seven passengers with cargo room to spare. It offers an excellent standard of safety features on deck, as well as competitive fuel economy. If you’re looking for a new family car, you might want to give it a whirl!
