It is raining today. This is a bit of a shock to all Vancouverites who have enjoyed the driest July on record. We have forgotten everything about rainy days. I am NOT changing out of my flip flops.
What it does do however, is remind us that the summer holidays are half over. YIPES.
The words ‘back to school shopping’ are being bandied around now. This marketing will grow into a loud scream as this month wears on.
The rain also made me realize that my son only has a ski jacket(there may be a too small already rain jacket in there somewhere) to wear for inclement weather and not a rain jacket. So I took a look at my standby for kids shopping – Old Navy – and was sadly disappointed in what they currently have online for boys. I hope this changes soon. The girls oddly have way more to choose from at this moment.
I am sure more stock will appear soon for the boys.
Fall clothes shopping for kids drives me nuts, especially when it comes to the chain stores. When I think of key items that my kids need for back to school it includes:
- Light weight rain gear (it is not cold – it is wet)
- rubber boots (not snow boots)
- School bags that don’t scream gender differences
- More than BLACK for boys and PINK for girls (can we stop with the dark NON SAFE clothing for school-age boys please!)
Not much to ask for …but I find myself digging through snow jackets, snow pants, and snow boots repeatedly. This used to be a huge issue at places like Zellers and Wal-Mart. So yes, I am talking about the more low end when it comes to prices here. I am sure there are many trendy child focused boutiques that have cute rain gear….but lets get real here. Not all of us can afford that. We shop at the affordable chains for a reason people.
I am also on the search for pants for my nine year old that FIT. We need taller fit models for girls clothes I am thinking.
I also want rain friendly shoes that are not runners….that kids might actually like to wear. Thoughts?
Anyway, the point is that Vancouver is not that cold in the fall or winter and we need the kids clothing selections to reflect that.
Thank you….end rant.
