No really….
Today hubs and I attended a beginners clinic for moms to be with GD.
It was at 7:30 in the morning. That alone makes it all evil in my eye.
There were five of us moms there….I appeared to be the oldest, which is scary because it used to be weight and age related more than anything and this lot all looked fine to me!
Fine but totally unimpressed.
They weighed us and made us pee on sticks.
They handed out our ‘complimentary’ Glucose Testing Kits and a list of the insanely expensive stuff we will have to buy for our home testing pleasure.
Some of the ladies did have very high readings and will be stuck with this routine for a while.
I don’t think I will.
I was borderline on the blood tests when I did the fasting glucose drink thing and today’s three tests have all been right where they are supposed to be. We will see how the rest of them go.
I think for me, it is more about my weight and will be more a case of watching what I eat and staying away from the junk. Pop has been my main craving with this pregnancy….just after I had weaned myself away from it.
They gave us some good nutritional guides to follow – the no juice thing sucks though. I LIKE Fruit Juice.
This week is going to suck though….I have to test myself before and after every meal, as well as try to walk or do SOME moderate exercise after each meal too..we have decided vacuuming and other housework counts!
I have to say, I am so glad that Patrick came with me. The other ladies were on their own, and between language barriers and preggo brain, they all looked as stunned and confused by it all as I have been feeling.
With Patrick there reading and listening means I don’t have to re-explain it all to him and helped take the stress out of it all.
Thanks sweetie.
So I have one week of mega testing and watching what glucose readings we get from what foods. Then next Monday we meet indivually with a Doctor who will assess the results for us.
I will keep you all posted.
I am hoping that at least something FORCING me to eat regular meals will give me a tad more energy than I have had.
Given my needle phobia I have always said if I ever developed diabetes I do NOT know how I would handle it. SHUDDER.
I’m sorry you have to deal with all the restrictions and crap when you have a pregnancy on top of it all! Arg!
Also? I hate that glucous drink. I can’t keep it down. I always have to try it 2 or 3 times.

I failed my initial GD screening test during my most recent pregnancy and was beside myself with anxiety about such strict diet control. What a hassle. Thank goodness my fasting test was normal. The good news is that that pregnancy was over before I knew it, so I’m wishing you a speedy return to the world of juice drinkers.

Honestly, I declined the GD screening. I thought that if I had any markers for it, I would adopt the diet and lifestyle recommendations, which is generally how it is managed anyway. There’s no way I wanted to do all the monitoring. So I am totally with you if you don’t adopt the regimen.
And you’ll have to celebrate giving birth with serious quantities of fruit juice. 😉
GD isn’t so bad…….think of it as a chance to improve your eating habits! heck, I had GD with both pregnancies and it was easily control with diet and exercise – and as a bonus, only gained 6 and 12 pounds with each pregnancy. Just don’t do what I did and go hog-wild and eat yourself silly after babe is born! lol paying for THAT now! 😉

7:30???? am?????
And for the drinks that does stink. Can you drink all the funky teas or does that offend your Scottish sensibilities? I keep the fancy tazo like teas for ice tea and their yummy with just a teaspoon of juice. Can you have any juice?
What about beer? Right.
Don’t get dehydrated or all the other stuff will just be hooey for sure.

Very lucky to have Patrick come along with you. Here’s hoping he’s your good luck charm.

Hang in there. That glucose test and the whole gestational diabetes thing is so stressful. I didn’t have it, but I know some people who did. At least you’ll start forming some good habits – like eating well and exercising…. I am STILL trying to break the bad eating habits I picked up in pregnancy, and the no exercising…!
