Crunchy Carpets

Clean socks are a privilege, not a right

Rest in Peace Little One

November 9, 2008 by Kerry Sauriol 11 Comments

So, last Wednesday, on a trip to PetSmart, we spotted a couple of kittens up for adoption.  They sort of melted our hearts, especially Gracie…and so we took them.

I haven’t had a kitten in years and figured too the kids would love the fun and games.

Gracie was sweet and friendly from the start.

Holly was rambunctuous and full of mischief.  She still is.

However, on Friday I notice that Gracie was doing so well….she seemed to have gotten quieter and quieter since Wednesday.

At midnight I drove her down to the Animal ER.

She didn’t make it.

They don’t know what was wrong..but she was severely dehydrated and when they had started treatment, her tiny heart stopped.  On request (for Adams sake) they tried to resuscitate her..to no avail.

She was gone.

Our Wee Gracie.

Gracie like Oprah.

We had been drawn to her because of her strange fur.  She was curly.  So she much have had a Cornish or Devon Rex somewhere in her lineage.  She was so soft.

I feel just awful.  I wish I had caught on quicker.  I wish I hadn’t upset Adam with MORE bad news.

However, at least Holly/Molly (she has an M on her forhead) seems to be doing ok.  We are taking her to the vet tomorrow JUST in case.

Her fave place appears to be my shoulder.  She sits there when I am here typing.

Needless to say, the kids love her.

But I feel so bad for little Gracie…..so so bad.

The joy and pain of loving pets.

Ack! I’m sorry to hear about Gracie. Poor thing. I hope Molly (great name with the M on her head!) is doing okay and getting used to her new home.

Hey, did you get a haircut? It looks great!

Oh, so sad…I’m sorry for your loss.

I do love the kitty with the M on it’s head though. That’s pretty cool!

So sorry about your sweet little kitten. One of the sad facts about buying pets from places like PetSmart instead of from responsible breeders or from the Shelter.

Pets from pet stores are often from puppy and kitten mills. (So are ones from the Shelter often, but the caring people at the Shelters generally give them the TLC they need.)

I’ve always been warned that THE FIRST THING you do with a pet store pet is to rush it to your vet for a complete check up. It’s often not “economically feasible” for some petstores (or they think it isn’t) to keep a close watch on their animals.

She wasn’t from a petstore..it was a rescue operation that is allowed space in the store..I never buy pet store pets…only rescue animals..all my animals are rescue animals..

Then she may have had a congenital heart deflect. Sadly, not that uncommon. Again, sympathy to you and your kids. It must have been heartbreaking.
