Thinking About the Future with Alert 1 Medical Alert Systems

October 20, 2013 by Kerry Sauriol Leave a Comment

My mom won’t like this post.  BUT.  As I get older, sadly one of the things that sink in to me is that my mom – who rocks – is getting older too.  So, while I am not concerned about her balance and stability yet, one day I probably will.  Hence why I think companies like Alert 1 Medical Alert Systems are a good idea.

In the United States and Canada the ongoing trend is to try to keep our senior citizens in their own homes as much as possible.  The baby boomer population is aging and the infrastructure for care is not as prepared as we would like it to be.  Thus being prepared to help our grandparents, parents and (in the future) ourselves is crucial and the services like medical alerts for seniors offered by Alert 1 are crucial.

The medical alert system is one of three key services that Alert 1 offer to help seniors live safely in their own homes.  Also included is their emergency monitoring system and other optional accessories that they offer in their packages.  Alert 1 is a US based company, but there are similar companies in Canada. And if any of you have ‘snowbird’ relatives, this sort of system would give you peace of mind. They offer affordable and adjustable alarm systems to suit the needs of each individual.

The system seems to be fairly simple and easy to use.  The basic package includes a base that plugs in the same way a phone does and then a remote button that can be worn as a bracelet or a necklace.  So you don’t have to pay installation fees.  The system transmits a signal to an emergency monitoring center that is staffed 24/7.  The operators are then tasked to send for the right sort of help as required by you or your loved one and they stay on the line until the ‘help’ arrives.

As I have stated.  My mom is not there yet, and my husband’s grandmother is in a care home already, but I do think that I would be looking at a simple medical alert system like this to at least help MY peace of mind, Mom and I worry about each other as it is if we don’t hear from the other on a regular basis. AND I already worry that she ‘can’t get to a phone,’ so this sort of service would keep ME from freaking out that’s for sure.

For those of you with aging parents, do you have a plan to keep them in their homes?  It is something to start thinking about that is for sure.
