Keeping us Safe

November 26, 2009 by Kerry Sauriol 1 Comment

Just before Halloween, I was invited to attend a small mixer/presentation by the people behind Preventable.ca. The focus of the mixer was safety around Halloween. They were then focusing on keeping our little trick or treaters safe on dark rainy nights. Their site talked about fireworks safety and so on.

The crew were kind enough to provide trick or treat backs for the kids with the words “You’re not expecting a child to run into traffic” done in reflecting ink.

I didn’t get a chance to talk to everyone involved in great detail as my escort for the evening – my son – was not feeling well, but they all are very dedicated and enthusiastic and the site is worth bookmarking and keeping note of.

But the site and their goal is not just about child safety and special events like Halloween.  Preventable.ca wants to make sure we are aware of danger and accidental injury all year round.  This is home, work, on the road, and at play.

The site states that “preventable injuries are the #1 killer of British Columbians between the ages of 1 and 44.”   That is a scary statistic.

“The Community Against Preventable Injuries has become a province-wide, multi-partner organization designed to raise awareness, transform attitudes, and ultimately change behaviours. Its goal is to significantly reduce the number – and severity – of preventable injuries in BC.

A registered non-profit organization, The Community is governed by a board of directors representing organizations including the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation, Insurance Bureau of Canada, London Drugs Ltd., BC Ministry of Labour and Citizens’ Services, Pacific Blue Cross, TELUS and WorkSafeBC. In addition, The Community’s work is made possible through the financial and in-kind support of over 30 other companies and organizations.”

I think we all need to make our children aware and ourselves be aware of just how easily accidents can happen, and do our best to avoid such situations.

Education and awareness is key to preventing death and injury.  From wearing bike helmets, to making sure things like ladders are secure when putting up those Christmas lights….we need to take care.

I couldn’t agree with you more. There are so many things that we do that if we aren’t cautious could turn into a catastrophe…case in point..this summer my brother was deep frying a turkey….long story one I will post about someday…but it ended up with one of my brothers having 3rd degree skin burns and having to go to the burn unit at VGH and having skin grafts…my sister was alos affected and spent 3 days in the ICU with smoke inhalation. So it’s all about reading instructions and following them….a very good reminder…thank you…
