Clean socks are a privilege, not a right

Easters come and go

April 12, 2009 by Kerry Sauriol 5 Comments

Easter is here.  The turkey is at rest.  Potatoes are boiling.  The kids are stuffed with chocolate and the rain is pouring down.

Pat has gone to pick up his Grandmother to join us for our Easter Dinner.

A mellow Easter…our extended family is not a big ‘getting together’ lot.  We are all fractured and split into many groups across the Lower Mainland and elsewhere.

So my mom is helping with the vege for dinner and we will have ‘Great’ Granny here and that will be that.

I am sure my Brother in Law and his new boy will be with their in-laws today..they all live a LOT closer together and seem to do a lot more ‘family’ stuff than our lot.

I am trying to think though..I honestly don’t have much memory of childhood Easter dinners.  Though I am sure they existed.

I remember all the kids stuff we did at school.  I remember the Easter Services with Mr. Casebo our local minister and I remember getting one or two CADBURY Eggs..usually a Yorkie one or a Galaxy one…and I vaguely remember the ritual ‘egg rolling’ of the hard boiled eggs at the local park.

But I can barely remember any dinner with extended family.

I will have to ask mom about that.

Maybe as a kid, like mine, it just wasn’t that important to me.  Though I am sure my mom sweated through whatever was arranged.

I mean, my kids don’t care.  They just want the candy and that is it.

And while I love entertaining….our house just isn’t really cut out for it…unless it is BBQ’s.

But I feel that we need some sort of ‘tradition’ for the kids.  Milestones that are not just remembered for getting stuff..but for being with family.  For gathering.

I feel bad that my kids won’t have memories of Aunties like I did.  Aunties who came for tea and brought treats.  Aunties who smelled like lavender and lilly of the valley.

I feel bad that they have lost a grandmother and grandfather already.   Logan and our wee girl will have no memories of Patricks parents.

Thank goodness for my mom and thank goodness that my brother in law married into a HUGE family.

Speaking of our wee girl….I am officially into the third trimester now.

Depressingly…I am at 26 weeks…which was when I found out that Scott was dead.

This one seems be doing good though.  Phew.

Though my midwife seems to think I am at 28 weeks…so whenever she shows up will be a surprise for all!

I look like a ship under full sail..if you know that old expression.

I feel good though…

I hope SHE feels good!

Happy Easter all…

Fun! It looks like the sun is coming out so hopefully the rest of the weekend won’t be so depressingly rainy and windy.

We have no family nearby, and things are sorta strained anyway, so we do the Easter thing with just our family. I’m not a real entertaining kinda gal, I find it nerve wracking.

Usually we have lots of chocolate, a nice dinner, and a hike. This year we did the chocolate early and will do the dinner tomorrow. Hubs has the flu so the hike may not happen, but we have hung out together.

I honestly don’t remember really big Easter dinners in my childhood either. I mostly remember the Easter baskets and the candy. I was a kid, it doesn’t surprise me that the sugar would be the highlight.

    And I think you’re looking great! 🙂

Easter….I have lots of memories of Easter…I think part of it was that at Easter we always got a new outfit..and our Easter Bonnets and gloves….I have a big family 11 brothers and sisters….so we really didn’t need extas at the table although I know we did…and then when my elder sibs started having families of their own the parties just got bigger….I loved it. So yesterday I had prepared brunch for my mother in law, sister in law and her mom, her daughter and friend and of course her little baby….it was fun. The men all went out golfing…and the ladies sat and enjoyed the Easter afternoon. It was rather nice.

I am glad you are feeling so well…you look great. Whatever you are doing it is agreeing with you….cheers!

We had an out of the ordinary easter…hunted eggs in the pouring down rain! *LOL* Afterward, the kids declared it was “The Best Easter Ever”. THAT is what it’s all about. 🙂

You are lookin’ good, momma. I’m glad you’re feeling well!!! I can’t wait to see the new addition.

    you look fantastic.
I don’t remember Easter for much of anything beyond candy when I was a kid. I think that’s pretty normal.
