Crunchy Carpets

Clean socks are a privilege, not a right

On the World and the War…

April 5, 2007 by Kerry Sauriol 14 Comments

This morning, while my son drank his milk he watched a bit of the world news with me.

We usually avoid most of it in the am, to depressing.

We saw images of the British naval crew safe on home turf.

We saw images of soldiers walking around burning vehicles in Iraq.

My son looked at me and said:  ” Mom, do we really STILL need soldiers?”

What a question.

That really sad that our children have to grow up with this in their lives. Very perceptive child!

I wish we could have answered NO to his question. The children allways seem to have to pay for all the stupid adults and their crazy “what to be on top of the dog pile ways”. Man has been fighting Man sense the beginning of time. Why is this????

No, Adam, we don’t NEED soldiers for any real human reason. Having grown up watching the Viet Nam war as I was 5 and 6 and 7, I can hear Adam’s question in my own young voice. What America needs soldiers for is to fund both of our two biggest welfare states: the military and the oil industry. It is no accident that the current administration of our overly-important country has under-funded education at this time. Without skills, you can’t find sustainable work–oh, but there’s the army! (/navy/marines/air force).
We really need the conceptual truth of GI-Joe; we don’t really need what you are having to watch on TV. (sorry to be so long!)

I was going to say the same thing as Linda… ‘out of the mouths of babes…’

    How did you answer him?

What did I say to my little boy?

All I said was that yes, indeed we seemed to STILL need soldiers…but soldiers were not always there to fight in wars or deal with bad stuff. They were also there to help when people or countries needed it…from anything and that was a good thing.

But hopefully they would not be fighting when he was grown up.

    Wow – what a question.
Remember that book “kids say the darndest things” ?
I wish with all my heart that you could have said “our soliders are coming home and helping our country now”
Happy Easter to you & your family!
