All kinds of things going on at the house of crunch these days.
I am in a bit of a fog and my mood has been all over the place.
Because of the mold issue in our current residence, we have begun investigating the possibility of buying ourselves a place.  Being that we live in Vancouver, home of one of the craziest real estate markets ever…this is easier said than done. Especially for self employed writer types like ourselves.
The broker we have been chatting with has been very helpful and we were encouraged to hear that we could actually get a half decent mortgage…just one that would NOT buy us a home IN Vancouver. Â However a decent down payment and astronomical monthly payments would kill us.
Fun huh. We have been stumbling around feeling mad and frustrated and glum all at the same time.
To cheer ourselves up, we gathered the family up (Nana included) and headed to a new ‘hip’ sushi place down on Main Street for dinner last night.  It was good. Great prices too. I love that my kids like sushi.
And isn’t that a hip and trendy thing to do….venture into DINK territory with our kids in our cool NON mini van.
Am I really hip and just don’t know it? Am I hip but in denial?
I thought I was just a geek. Married to another geek. Hanging out with geek friends.
I am confused now!
Which brings me to my next ‘event.’ Because of my outspokeneness about the whole ‘hip blogger’ thing that has been buzzing around the net for a while, I have been asked to speak on a radio show about it.
I think I am supposed to be the ‘anti-hipster.’  I am not sure how I really feel about that. What does that say about me?  Do people have this vision of a woman wearing slacks and polo shirts with pressed seams and collars? A woman living in suburban bliss and playing those old but classic Lionel Ritchie and Rick Springfield tunes as she churns out cookies by the score?
I hope not.  And NO offence to those that DO fit that description. The world would be a boring place if we were all the same.
It just isn’t me.
And while I do have disdain for those that appear to try TOO hard or seem to be fighting some sort of parental stereoteype, I do understand.
But I also think that really, no matter what your lifestyle, if you fit into the Gen X age group, you will be classified by some as vaguely hip, or at least a ‘grup’ or kidult.’
We can’t help it. We are different from the earlier generations.  The baby boomers have dominated our society, are still working, still spending gobs of cash and basically controlling our little society.  We ARE delayed in our growing up. Most by economics. Or by the cost of education, lack of work, etc.
We are also the video game generation. Like it or not, we grew up with Atari and so on.  This HAS shaped us.  We played em as kids and lots still play em as adults.
I assume for older generations this can be a bit boggling.
Our pop culture references have a HUGE influence over our lives and lifestyles.
This is just us.
It does not make us cooler. It does not make us worse or better parents.
It just is.
I guess I better go prepare some notes for this thing.
Wow Crunchy! Have fun and break a leg!
Hey Crunchy!
What was the name of the Sushi place on Main? I work near Main and Broadway…looking for good sushi…we normally order from Sushiyama (it’s good!) on Broadway and Brunswick, across from the Kingsgate Mall.
May I suggest my friend’s blog?
ingliseast.typepad.com/ingliseast/
Her name is Kate…she belongs to Maya’s Mom too. She is my friend that lives in Nova Scotia…she’s expecting twin boys and already has a 2 year old son! Oy vey! Needless to say she is going to have her hands full. But she is my “hip/trendy” friend and has refused to enter into that mommy “geek-hood”. However, she did just buy a….MINIVAN! ACK! But she manages to stay her hip self!
Her blog entries are amazingly written. She’s had many people tell her to become a pro writer…really.
And the same goes for you too! I am just visiting your blog here for the first time! Love it!
Kelly (fellow Vancouver-ite!)
Kelly…hey nice to ‘meet’ya..
The sushi place was further up at 3710 Main…near em…33rd I think. It is called Zibang or ZipBang…family run place.
And did NOT get a mini van!!! Phew!!! We have maintained our cool factor!
Hi, Crunchy!
Love the way you write! If I ever had one, my coolness factor is l-o–n-g gone. And all the things younger moms do today – it’s a wonder I didn’t kill my kids. We gave them aspirin (shudder…), let them ride untethered in the car, ride their bikes w/o helmets, and all sorts of things! Well, they survived despite their upbringing. Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s the important things you’re giving them – that extra bedtime loving – and the nurturing that will produce the best results.
~~~Blessings~~~
love your anti-hipster description!
when is your radio bit? would love to listen in
I THINK it may be on around 10 am on Friday. Not sure.
It is on the ‘Sounds Like Canada’ show on CBC Radio One.
We are taping it tomorrow am. I think they do those ‘podcast’ things….shows how uncool I am!
Should be interesting.
I am starting to freak out now.
