On Friday I managed (after forgetting to fill out the volunteer forms on time and then not knowing what time the rained in games were starting) to see the last hour or so of the schools annual sports day. We missed last years event due to an amazingly well-timed media trip to Disneyland.
You might suspect that I am not that in to Sports Day and yes, you might be right. I have been experiencing them for 8 years now and due to the timing of Tara’s birth I get to experience the fun for another 8 years. THAT is a lot of sports days.
The school has quite a teeny tiny gym and the rainy weather made for a day of ‘team building’ that was starting to wear on the kids. But I think they managed to end on a fairly good up note, even not complaining too much when the Principal stated that clean up of said events was now part of their point scoring possibilities.
I am always cheered by the enthusiasm and camaraderie I see at the kids school. They truly are a great bunch of kids and I (especially on the eve of the rolling strikes and insane lock outs) commend the teachers for keeping and nurturing this mix of kids of all stripes into loud brash and enthusiastic teams of rainbow colours.
I will admit to not harbouring warm fuzzy memories of my own sports days. I was never sporty or comfortable in any sort of competitions, so it was a day dreaded to participate in. Now as a parent the days – the novelty- of being THERE for the kids…..starts to ebb just a bit. I frankly don’t have the energy these days. Sadly, it does start to feel like a job. But …as parents…it is a job that we can’t NOT do.
If we can be there….and are not working or caring for others…it is a duty…and like someone mentioned on Facebook, not just to your own kids but to those kids whose parents can’t be there on those special school days. We have to be there……when they needs us most….even when we are oh so tired of it all.
