If you read this blog or follow any of my social media channels, you will already know that animals have a pretty important place in the House Crunch. We have currently, two large dogs, pictured above, three cats, a hamster and a gecko. We have our ups and downs with them all. Zia the white one is a bit of a handful, but like Lily has heart of gold. Lily, the black one is a needy thing who adores Caity. They are part of our family, and like the humans need just as much care and attention.
In the summer months especially. Multiple animals who go in and out of house means fleas. Living next door to a nature park also means being extra wary of things like ticks. Ticks can carry Lyme Disease which is just as bad for animals as it is for us humans. Eww. That means getting good advice from your vet and finding the right treatments that work for your circumstances and animals.
K9 Advantix is a topical monthly application that works on contact to kill ticks and fleas on dogs, and protect them from further infestation.
- Ticks are tiny bugs that feed on blood. Unlike mosquitoes and spiders that “bite and run”, ticks attach by burrowing their mouth parts into the skin, where they feed for hours or sometimes days before falling off once engorged.
- Ticks move slowly and cannot fly, usually coming into contact with people and animals in grassy or wooded areas
- In Canada, climate change has caused the range of ticks able to carry Lyme disease to expand from a limited area of Ontario to include regions from coast-to-coast
- The blacklegged tick – known as the Deer tick – is commonly found in North America and is known to be a carrier of several animal and human diseases, including Lyme disease
- Bites are generally painless and symptom-free, and ticks are so tiny (1-5 mm when unfed) they often go undetected
- Dogs are at higher risk for tick bites because of their increased exposure to tick habitats
- Compounding the risk of Lyme disease is that most dog owners don’t know how to recognize a tick bite or the symptoms of Lyme disease, and would not know when to see their veterinarian
Bayer K9 Advantix II provides dog owners with a waterproof topical protection against ticks and fleas through a combination of three active ingredients, imidacloprid, pyriproxyfen and permethrin . It attacks parasites’ nerve cells, paralyzing and killing them on contact.
I would highly recommend making sure you groom your dogs frequently to check for ticks and fleas, especially after a day at the dog park, etc., and also to consult with your vet is a product like Advantix is the right choice. Because of this promotion I was fortunate to consult with a vet, as well as already loving my own vet. Bayer K9 Advantix helps:
- Helps get rid of ticks and fleas—within 24 hours of treatment
- Prevents further tick and flea infestations for at least four weeks
- Reduces the risk of canine vector-borne diseases (CVBD) such as Lyme disease
- Safe and proven—can be used on puppies as young as eight weeks
- Helps in the prevention of flea allergy dermatitis (FAD)
- Available in four different sizes for puppies and dogs
Here in Vancouver we certainly ARE in the Dog Days of Summer as we are being blasted by a heatwave. Here at House Crunch it has been all about keeping the animals cool and hydrated. The fans are blasting and the water bowls are full. We have been ‘misting’ them too in the evenings. We are keeping any walks to the cool evenings here just now, but when it does settle down weather wise – this would be a GREAT prize pack for your pooch to enjoy.

Both of my dogs (and deceased cat) are rescues named Reina, Phoenix (and Aries). we live on 15 acres and they get ticks every year. We also have confirmed cases of Lyme Disease in our forest!? I had a tick (not deer) on my this year. This would come in really handy!

Our pup is Hero, a cocker spaniel. He came to us from a breeder who came on hard times & her pups weren’t getting the care they needed. He’s got some behavior issues (intense fear) from being around dogs that were higher on the pecking order than he was.
He’s so happy in our home, where he gets all the love one family can give one dog!

Yes, Summer is horrible if we have multiple pets. And as we live near parks and gardens, fleas and ticks attack them badly.
