My mom actually worked for TELUS during my teen and adult years, so I have always been aware of how community driven TELUS truly is. It is not all about telephones and the internet. TELUS encourages community involvement within it employees TELUS and as a company. This was why I was honoured to be asked to check out the launch of their ‘Give Where You Live’ school curriculum with Free the Children.
Telus has been an enthusiastic sponsor of Free the Children and their We Day events. This new program dives head first into youth empowerment and encouragement by bringing a packaged curriculum for teachers to aid in developing youth’s social conscious and give them the tools to finding ways for them to make their own mark.
It was really fun to see Mark and Craig Kielburger do such an amazing job of engaging our youth, and with this school outreach project, the power of one will surely become a voice of many. Empowerment is crucial to our children’s future. We live in such a ‘ME’ world that anything that can get this kids to see farther than their own iPods, is for me, crucial.
Take a look at their video:
The Give Where You Live curriculum is launching in 40 BC middle and secondary schools this year with the expectation that 150,000 youth across Canada will be involved in the project by 2016. The project aims to provide our youth with the resources to fulfil their passion with the support and tools needed to act on their ideas for change. Each school will be have the opportunity to to apply for a $1000 charitable grant from TELUS to bring their project to life.
